Community dance, public space and a sea of red at Carlisle Castle

On Sunday 19 July 2026, Dance Ahead CIC brought people together at Carlisle Castle for a large-scale community performance inspired by Kate Bush’s iconic Wuthering Heights dance.

Participants of different ages and levels of experience gathered in red clothing to perform the choreography collectively, transforming the historic setting into a playful and striking public spectacle.

The project was designed to be welcoming and accessible. Participants could learn the dance independently through instructional videos or attend free open rehearsals in Carlisle.

For many, the experience was not about technical perfection, but about the joy of showing up, moving together and becoming part of something larger than themselves.

The final performance was documented through photography, film and aerial footage, capturing the scale of the gathering and the vivid contrast between the red-clad dancers and Carlisle Castle.

The event was hosted by Crown Lane Cellar in collaboration with Dance Ahead CIC.

Impact and legacy

Wuthering Heights Carlisle demonstrated the appetite for joyful, accessible cultural activity in public space.

It created an opportunity for people to participate without needing formal dance experience and presented Carlisle as creative, playful and open to possibility.

The event also highlighted how familiar choreography, shared cultural references and a strong visual identity can help remove barriers to participation and bring a wide cross-section of people together.

There is clear potential for Wuthering Heights Carlisle to become a recurring event. Future editions would benefit from dedicated investment to support coordination, access, documentation and the wider infrastructure required to deliver the project sustainably.
